Mobile Malware Explained: How Corrata Detects Threats On the Device

Mobile devices are the most connected endpoints in most businesses and often the least visible. In this short explainer, Corrata's Head of Sales and Partnerships, Matt O'Callaghan, explains how spyware, adware and banking trojans reach work phones without looking like an attack, and how Corrata identifies them directly on the device by checking which applications request potentially dangerous permissions and by monitoring the communication protocols those applications use.

The most connected device in the business
The device that sits in everybody’s pocket tends to be the most connected, with the least level of visibility and protection. We operate day to day, we read our emails, we review customer contracts, and it connects into almost every system within the business.
Malware that doesn’t look like an attack
Malware is an attack that typically doesn’t always look like an attack, and can be delivered in a multitude of different ways, be it spyware, adware or a banking trojan. Once it’s deployed, that’s when it gets to work, stealing your credentials, taking your company’s data and tracking you as an individual. It’s vital that organisations take a step forward in how they better protect themselves against these different types of malware.
Detecting malware on the device
Here at Corrata, we operate directly on the device, which means that we can protect you in two ways. We can firstly identify any applications that are operating on that phone that might be requesting potentially dangerous permissions, but also then identify any malware that’s present on the device. How we do that is by monitoring the communication protocols being used by these applications, to be able to isolate and identify those that are potentially calling home to command and control servers, and hence stealing and passing your data back.
